In the course of its history, it has been a shelter for poor elderly, a military hospital and army barracks. Between 2011 and 2019, the monastery was carefully restored and brilliantly converted into a public library with a co-working space and an exhibition and performance area. Access is free.

When Mechelen city council took the decision in 2012 to use the former Dominican monastery (Predikherenklooster) as a public library , it approached the Flemish Government Architect and his team. The council’s purpose was to activate this area on the borders of the city centre.

In 2011, after several failed attempts to repurpose the ruins of the monastery, the city decided to restore the historic landmark building and turn it into a public library , which will open in the autumn of 2018.
